Welcome to the Congress!

It is with great joy that I welcome all participants to the 36th World Vegetarian Congress. This is the first time in nearly 100 years of history of this Congress that it takes place in Latin America. I hope it will herald many other vegetarian events in this part of the globe.

A congress like ours necessarily involves debating on sad and worrisome aspects which we well be dealing with during the coming week, but it is also a wonderful moment to enjoy the company of like-minded people, to congregate and accumulate strength and hope for a better world.

Brazil’s figures are saddening: it is at the moment the main producer of bovine, swine and broiler chicken, as well as of soy ( to feed the animals). Our rich Amazon Forest is being destroyed to meet the increasing demand for meat and soy. The World as a whole aims to preserve the forest. The time is pressing for our message to be spread all over the world, showing the inescapable connection between a meat-centered diet and the destruction and contamination of forests and natural resources.

Hunger continues to rage throughout the world and vegetarianism has a strong message to put an end to this calamity.

The health of people, animals and the planet is being threatened by an inadequate diet.

Humanity claims for peace, but peace is not possible as long as it is daily associated with bloody and cruel acts indissolubly linked to the rearing and slaughtering of thousands and thousands of helpless, sentient creatures.

We are a very diverse group, from nearly 30 different nations of all continents, and this diversity enriches us in what we have in common: our love for this noble cause. So I invite all of you to congregate, relax and enjoy this week. Simultaneously, do gather strength to better defend and promulgate vegetarianism in each one of you home countries, cities, and districts, according to your particular vision.

If there is a future, this future is vegetarian.

For a vegetarian world. For people. For animals. For the planet.

For a vegetarian world. For people. For animals. For the planet.

11/ 12  presenter Mitsuru Kakimoto

Alex Bourke
