Kobayashi readily shoved the money, just as he had received it, into his suit pocket. And just as his manner was abrupt so too was his way of expressing his thanks impudent.

‘Thanks,’ he said. using the English expression. ‘I may seem to be just borrowing this but you probably intended to give it to me outright, didn’t you? Because you’ve realized

from the outset, and with contempt for me, that I have neither the means nor the will to return it.’

  Tsuda answered:

‘Of course I gave it to you. But now that you’ve actually received it even you can’t help realizing your own contradiction, can you?

‘No, I don’t realize anything of the kind. What sort of contradiction? Do you mean it’s a contradiction for me to receive money form you?’

‘Not exactly.’ Tsuda took a condescending attitude. ‘But just think about it for a moment. That money was in my wallet up until a minute ago, wasn’t it? And in a flash it was transferred to your pocket, wasn’t it? If you don’t like me to use such fancy language, I’ll speak more clearly. Who was it who changed the ownership of that money so suddenly from me to you? Try answering that.’

‘It was you. You gave it to me.’

  ‘No. No, it wasn’t me.’

‘What in the world are you talking about? You sound like a Zen priest muttering in his sleep. All right then, who was it?’

‘It was no one. It was “leisure”! The leisure you’ve been attacking all along gave it to you. That’s why, by accepting the money without a protest you’ll actually be bowing

before the very leisure you’ve been criticizing so severely. And isn’t that a contradiction?’

As his eyes twinkled Kobayashi answered with:

‘Of course. If that’s the way you speak maybe it is. But somehow or other it’s funny. Because actually I don’t have the slightest feeling of having bowed to that leisure.’

‘All right then, give me back the money.’

Tsuda stuck his hand in front of Kobayashi’s nose. Kobayashi looked at Tsuda’s palm which seemed as soft as a woman’s.

‘No, I won’t. “Leisure” isn’t ordering me to give it back to you.’

Tsuda laughed as he withdrew his hand.

  ‘There, I told you so.’

‘What do you mean by saying that? It seems you don’t understand what I mean when I say that leisure didn’t order me to return it to you. You’re still just a poor little rich boy.’

As he said this, he turned aside to look towards the door, and then added:

‘He should be coming soon now.’

Tsuda, who had been watching Kobayashi’s expression carefully, was a trifle startled.

  Who’s coming?’

‘Nobody in particular. Someone who has even less leisure than I.’

Kobayashi studiedly gave a light tap to his pocket into which he had shoved the yen bills.

‘The leisure which transmitted this from you to me doesn’t say I should give it back to you again. But it does order me to send it in turn to one who has less leisure than I.Leisure’s like water, you know, It flows from the high to the low but never goes back from the bottom to the top.’

Tsuda roughly understood what Kobayashi’s words themselves meant. But he did not understand their specific application. Consequently he fell into an uneasy state between alertness and bewilderment. Kobayashi then came at him abruptly with the following outburst:

‘I bow my head before leisure. I recognize my inconsistency. I assent to your sophistry. It doesn’t matter any more what I say. I express my thanks to you. I’m deeply grateful to you.’

He suddenly began to shed large tears. This dramatic transformation made the somewhat startled Tsuda even more uneasy. Since he could not help recalling the scene of that evening a few days earlier at the bar where he had been at his wit’s end how to deal with Kobayashi, he frowned while at the same time he noticed that now was a good time to take advantage of him.

‘I most certainly am not expecting any gratitude from you. You’re the one who’s forgetting about the past you know. While I’ve been acting just the way I always have in the past, you’ve been misinterpreting everything. Isn’t that why our relations have become more and more strained? For example, even in that matter of your going to my home the other day in my absence and saying something to O-Nobu ---‘

Tsuda stopped at that point and looked darkly at Kobayashi. But since Kobayashi was looking down just then, Tsuda could not discover any change in his feelings.

‘Wouldn’t it be better if you stopped your little pranks of sowing dissension between your married friends?’

‘I don’t remember having said anything about you.’

‘But didn’t you just say ---.’

‘Oh, that was just a joke. You were making fun of me so I made fun of you in return.’

‘Well, I don’t know who it was who began making fun of the other, but that’s not the problem anyway. At any rate, I think it would be better if you were to tell me the whole truth.’

‘But I am telling you. I don’t know how many times I’ve repeated that I don’t remember having said anything about you. If you try asking your wife, you’ll find out.’

  ‘O-Nobu…’

  ‘What did she say?’

‘She didn’t say anything at all, and that’s why I’m upset. If she’s dwelling on it secretly without saying anything, then I can’t defend myself or explain myself, and I’m the one who’s in trouble.’

‘I tell you I didn’t say a thing! The problem is whether you’re going to behave like a good husband from now on or not.’

  ‘I…’

As Tsuda began, someone who had just entered approached and stood near their table.
